With college scholarships harder to obtain because of the sheer amount of high school athletes in the US and with child prodigy professional athletes making millions of dollars, parents are forcing their children to pick a single sport as early as five years of age. With best- selling books such as Outliers and the Talent Code, parents have been sold an idea those 10,000 hours of early specialization in one particular field guarantees success. Besides parents pushing children into early specialization you also have coaches for selfish reasons pushing children into early specialization so that they can have these athletes on their teams year round. The message being sent to parents and coaches is: start your children young and steer them into one sport and that child will make it to the professional level.
D1 Sports Training, a Tennessee-based chain of training centers that are especially popular with high school athletes, is positioning itself to add specialty medical care to its menu with the addition of a sports surgeon at its Homewood facility.

D1 Chattanooga’s member Tom Hancock and his team, Team Greenville, competed in South Carolina’s long course Master Swim Meet. Tom has been a two year member at D1 and attends the 10 am men’s executive class regularly. His hard work at D1 paid off and won him many events. Tom swam in the 200 individual medley and placed 3rd in his age group (45-49). He placed 1st first overall (ages 18+) in the 100 meter breaststroke and the 50 meter breaststroke. He placed 1st first in his age group for the 200 meter breaststroke and 2nd overall along with 2nd in his age group for the 400 individual medley and placing 3rd overall.
Rich Froning, who trained at D1's Corporate Wellness Facility for Averitt Express in Cookeville, TN, won the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games in California. The event was a tough test of determination over three days that included 10 daunting rounds of workouts. Froning won three events, finished second in two more and tied for second in another. We would like to congratulate the effort put forth by the D1 Birmingham coaches and members in the D1 vs. Iron Tribe Fitness Challenge. The competition was impressive as representatives from both facilities gave their all. We are very proud of Coach Emory, Coach Will and all the D1 athletes. Congrats to D1 Chattanooga athlete Chad Voytik, who has verbally committed to play at Pitt. Voytik, 6-foot-1 and 183 pounds, had scholarship offers from 12 schools, including Clemson, Louisville, Memphis, Mississippi State, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wake Forest. Rivals.com deemed him the No. 6 pro-style quarterback and 153rd prospect overall in the Class of 2012. In Cleveland, TN, Voytik has thrown for 3,650 yards and 33 touchdowns, with only 11 interceptions, in two seasons. He rushed for 439 yards last season. CLICK HERE to read more.
