Kurt Hester: Don’t Stunt Athletic Growth
With college scholarships harder to obtain because of the sheer amount of high school athletes in the US and with child prodigy professional athletes making millions of dollars, parents are forcing their children to pick a single sport as early as five years of age. With best- selling books such as Outliers and the Talent Code, parents have been sold an idea those 10,000 hours of early specialization in one particular field guarantees success. Besides parents pushing children into early specialization you also have coaches for selfish reasons pushing children into early specialization so that they can have these athletes on their teams year round. The message being sent to parents and coaches is: start your children young and steer them into one sport and that child will make it to the professional level.

D1 Sports Adds Sports Surgeon in Birmingham
D1 Sports Training, a Tennessee-based chain of training centers that are especially popular with high school athletes, is positioning itself to add specialty medical care to its menu with the addition of a sports surgeon at its Homewood facility.
Dr. Geoffrey Connor, who recently started seeing patients at the facility near Brookwood Medical Center, said he expects to be joined by a primary care physician within six months, and eventually by physicians in other specialties including neurology.
The chain of 12 facilities provides training and physical therapy to athletes ranging from soccer moms and recreational weekend warriors to professionals, but the bulk of its business is high school and middle school athletes, said Connor and CEO Will Bartholomew.
With the addition of on-site orthopedic sports medicine services, the company will integrate care, providing training, surgery and rehabilitation in one package. On-site orthopedic care is not new to athletic training facilities, Connor said, but the level of integration D1 is planning is unprecedented. CLICK HERE to read more from the Bham News.

After fielding numerous requests for training and workout advice, former athlete Will Bartholomew decided to open his own training facility in 2002. The result was D1 Sports Training in Nashville, Tenn.
Three years later, with expansion on the horizon, he put in a call to an old teammate from The University of Tennessee -- Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.
"Peyton is known for his training, and he wanted to be a part of something that inspires people to take care of their bodies," said Bartholomew. "It was a natural fit."
