Kurt Hester: Don’t Stunt Athletic Growth

With college scholarships harder to obtain because of the sheer amount of high school athletes in the US and with child prodigy professional athletes making millions of dollars, parents are forcing their children to pick a single sport as early as five years of age. With best- selling books such as Outliers and the Talent Code, parents have been sold an idea those 10,000 hours of early specialization in one particular field guarantees success. Besides parents pushing children into early specialization you also have coaches for selfish reasons pushing children into early specialization so that they can have these athletes on their teams year round. The message being sent to parents and coaches is: start your children young and steer them into one sport and that child will make it to the professional level.
