Softball Star Teaches the Next Generation

D1 athlete Monica Abbott has possibly the most impressive stats of any softball player to date. Her accolades include the NCAA's all time leader in strike outs, innings pictched, wins, and appearances in addition to an Olympic silver medal in the 2008 Beijing games where she pitched a perfect game. But Monica has not let all of this success go to her head. On the contrary, she uses her incredible talent to help the next generation of softball players develop their game with the help of the Monica Abbott All-Star Clinic in locations across the country. Monica recently sat down for an interview at D1 Knoxville, stay tuned into the D1 blog for more information on that. Congratulations Monica on all of your success!

Rookie Brad Cottam, who trained for the NFL Combine at D1, is becoming a factor in the Kansas City Chiefs' offense. Cottam, a tight end, had four catches for 34 yards in the game Sunday against the Jets, and is gaining recognition for his size and ability to move after catching the ball. You could say he's learning from the best...his teammate, Tony Gonzalez, who is one of the best tight ends in league history. Keep up the good work Brad!!

Sacked

Sacked...perhaps no word is more feared by an NFL quarterback. Raiders' defensive tackle, Terdell Sands, who trains at D1 Chattanooga, proved his worth by racking up not one, but two sacks against fellow D1 athlete Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers in the September 28th game. Sands' big hits elicited a collective "oooh" from spectators. It looks like D1 Chattanooga got the better end of D1 Huntsville in this one!

Check out the video below to see Terdell Sands in action.

Price Saves Rays in ALCS

Tampa Rays' pitcher, David Price, who has trained and conducted camps at D1, recorded a pressure packed save over the Boston Red Sox to send the Rays to the World Series. Price, a Vanderbilt graduate, got the call from the bullpen and stepped onto the mound in the 8th inning with two outs and the bases loaded, facing Boston's hot-hitter, J.D. Drew. It only took Price four pitches to strike him out and save the inning. In the 9th, Price walked his first batter, then struck out the next two before sealing the game against Jed Lowrie who grounded out. Price was then swarmed by the entire Rays' team on the mound! Way to go David Price and congrats on winning the AL Pennant!

Vote for D1's Manning for FedEx Air Player of the Week

It has been a good week for Colts QB Peyton Manning. The D1 co-owner not only had his best statistical game this season, but also led the Colts to their first victory in their new home, Lucas Oil Stadium. Manning was 19-of-28 for 271 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. His season high passer rating of 134.7 in the 31-3 victory over the Ravens was more than enough to name him the AFC Offensive Player of the Week, making him the second Indianapolis player to receive the honor this season. As a result of his performance Manning has also been nominated for the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week along with fellow D1 co-owner Philip Rivers. Fans can click here to vote until 11 a.m. Friday.

D1's Rivers Coming Back Strong from Knee Injury

Shortly after D1 Huntsville co-owner and San Diego Chargers QB, Philip Rivers injured his knee last season, Rivers became D1 Huntsville's first orthapaedic patient while rehabbing his knee. He didn't let last year's playoff injury of a torn ACL slow him down for too long. Now only months after reconstructive surgery, the young quarterback is dominating games in the 2008 season. Rivers was practically unstoppable in the Chargers 30-10 blowout over the New England Patriots on October 12th. Despite injuries to the wide receivers corps, Rivers was still 18 for 27 for 306 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. The Chargers got sweet redeption over the team that has knocked them out of the playoffs the previous two years. It looks like San Diego is on its way to becoming a force to be reckoned with.

Check out the video below to see Philip Rivers rehabbing at D1 Huntsville.

Dacus Making D1 Proud

D1 Combine athlete Weston Dacus is beating all odds with the Kansas City Chiefs. Dacus, who played college ball at the University of Arkansas, wasn’t drafted in the 2008 NFL Draft. Dacus wasn’t even signed shortly after the draft finished. He was one of 40 invited to attend the Chiefs rookie camp as a tryout prior to training camp. He was the only player to sign a contract out of that camp. He then went to training camp and beat the odds again and landed on the eight-man practice squad as a rookie free agent. After three games on the practice squad, Dacus was promoted to the 53-man roster where he has two tackles in two games on special teams. Way to go Weston! Thanks for making D1 proud!

A D1 Success Story

D1 is proud of its true success stories. Lisa Hansen, who underwent a total knee replacement in Greenville is exactly that. Due to her surgery and injury to her other knee, Hansen was unable to do much of any movement. So a training program was designed for Hansen that focused on strengthening her core and improving stability. The regime combined circuit and interval training to help strengthen Hansen's muscles and build endurance. As Hansen's balanced improved, the intensity of her workouts increased, as well as her confidence. After three and a half months of training, Hansen lost 35 pounds and is doing great.

"Lisa not only changed the way she looks and feels, but has put her other knee surgery on hold due to her success at D1. She is the perfect example to show that D1 is not just for an athlete, but for everyone," said D1 staffer Haley Rawlinson who has watched this total transformation.

Omiyale Gets First Start for Panthers

D1 2005 NFL Combine ahtlete, Frank Omiyale, got his first start of his career on Sunday when the Panthers played the Chiefs. Omiyale stepped in for injured lineman Jordan Gross who was out due to a concussion. Omiyale opened up holes for running back DeAngelo Williams who also trained at D1 for the 2006 NFL Combine. Teammates of Omiyale had lots of confidence in his ability to step up and perform well at game time. They called him, "their secret hidden gem for the last year and a half." Now that the cat's out of the bag on the Panther's offensive line depth, opponents better watch out! To read more click here.

D1 Athletes Ranked 5th in NFL

Some Tennessee Titans defenders who trained at D1 in the off-season are getting recognition for their stellar defensive performance. Nick Harper, Chris Hope, Vincent Fuller, Tony Brown, Jason Jones and David Thornton have been a big part in the Titans' 5-0 start this season. The Titans are one of only two teams in the NFL who are still undefeated. The defense is currently ranked 5th in the NFL and prior to Sunday's game against the Ravens, they had only allowed their opponents 46 points. After the Titans scored with 1:56 left in the fourth quarter to put them ahead 13-10 on Sunday against the Ravens, Nick Harper made the game ending interception when he picked off Ravens' quarterback Joe Flacco. Defensive linemen, Jones and Brown, have been putting pressure on quarterbacks, while Hope, Fuller, Harper and Thornton have been adding just as much pressure in the secondary. Way to go D1 Athletes!!!

R.A. Dickey Gives Back

Seattle Mariners pitcher, R.A. Dickey, who has trained at D1 Nashville is giving back to those in need. Mariners players have been cleaning out their lockers after their season, but they're not heading to the dumpsters. Dickey, who does missionary work in the off-season, will be bringing all the donated gear to young kids in Cuba and Nicaragua. "I go on these missionary trips every year and we take things like medicine, supplies and even athletic gear to these places," Dickey said. " You know, it's something we take for granted that they don't have any hope of getting." To read more click here.

Boxing champion Jermain Taylor, the co-owner of the new D1 Little Rock, will face Jeff Lacy in a super middleweight bout on Nov. 15 at Vanderbilt's Memorial Gym in Nashville. With D1 Little Rock opening around the same time, it should be an exciting month for Jermain Taylor and the D1 staff.
